Mumbai: Through an artist’s eye

Mumbai – a city full of noise, scandals and pollution; this is where I was born and this is where I have lived all my life.

Having spent so much time here, it is but evident that I have experienced many of the surprises this city has to offer- ranging from the beautiful diverse festivals on the streets of Kala Ghoda to being stranded in college during the 26/7 flood. This city has so much to offer that it only depends on each individual as to how much one wants to take from it.

My day starts with the alarm. I wake up realising that I have a busy day ahead of me. I end up running for a shower, running to catch the bus or train on time and then praying to God that I reach my lectures on time so that I don’t get thrown out of class.

In the overcrowded BEST buses and sometimes in the even more crowded local trains, people are constantly shoving you around, trying to get a seat for themselves.

After college, if the need arises, I sometimes go to Crawford market to buy my material. There is barely any place to walk here. This is when I get a true taste of this busy city.

I am a part of this busy city and definitely its pangs and toils affect me. However, the vast expanse of the blue sky and the sea with its endless waves has a soothing effect, relieving me of my worries. Sipping a cup of coffee by the window, gazing at the mysterious blue body of water in front of me is when I find the answers to the mysteries of my life.

Despite the chaos this city offers, this is still the place I love to call home because it has so much to offer that I can never get bored of it. There is so much culture and history associated with this city alone, that capturing it on one canvas is close to impossible.

For me, the most captivating part of the city is the sea, for gazing at that alone, brings me at peace with myself. Thus, in my paintings, subconsciously this part has been highlighted, and through them I hope to bring to the viewer the same feelings of tranquillity and serenity that I so often experience and cherish.
