Fashion goes local on the streets of Mumbai

Dolce and Gabbana, Mango, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, DKNY- the list is endless.

One feels on the seventh heaven when one is carrying a Gucci bag or wearing the very stylish and expensive ‘Guess’ watch. It definitely gives us the required high apart from adding value to the wardrobe.

But have you tried hoarding the streets of Mumbai? The Streets full of little road side shops. Streets full of life, full of people, streets full illumination, streets full of the most fashionable stuff to pick from.

Buying stuff from the road side is an experience in itself. The constant ‘halla bol’ by the sellers on one side and the haggling sounds of the buyers, in unison, perfectly brings the picture of a ‘street bazaar’ live in front of our eyes.

From the foreigner’s hub, Colaba Causeway to the very famous Hill Road -  every street has its own ambiance and charm.

Be it the chunky junk jewelry, fancy belts, chic clutches to the choicest of clothes… you ask for it and you get it.

What amuses me the most is that this week you see an original Benetton T-shirt and the next week, it is hanging in a street shop at a dirt cheap price.

Well, recently only, I fell in love with these white Puma flip flops. My wallet, however, showed its red signal as usual. Unwilling to budge, the shopaholic in me made me explore the Lokhandwala market – my favourite shopping destination. And much to my delight I bought the same footwear for only Rs.120. Except they were POMA. Well, what’s in the name?

Highlighted by the ‘low price’ aspect, shopping on the streets invites the saving of a lot of those notes in your wallet. In short: paisa vasool.

Now different streets provide different treats. Colaba Causeway has treasures of the trendiest junk jewelry. Lokhandwala is a must visit for some casual college wear while Hill Road, Bandra takes the cake for the more stylish party wear.

Just as all shopping, street shopping too is an art. A bigger one I had say.

So before you head out bravely, do keep in mind the 5 tips on getting a good bargain in Mumbai. Let me know how they worked for you…

  1. Well I personally would not settle for a POMA but you did get some amazing bargains on the streets for sure.

  2. I dont know yaar. I never get what I want from these shops at Colaba, Fashion Street, etc.

There is just so much stuff out there and it is so difficult to find what you really need.

Plus the shopkeepers are very rude.

Street shopping is surely not for me. I rather go to any pret store and pick up what I need. ;(
